Your best first bet, if you haven't done so already, will be to run the
Network Setup Wizard on one computer, then either use the option to make a
setup floppy to take to the second computer or run the Network Setup Wizard
on the second computer and give the same answers you gave on the first
computer. Running the Network Setup Wizard configures a number of options
that need to be configured correctly before you can start sharing files,
folders and printers.
If you have any non-Microsoft firewall or "Internet security" software
installed, you may need to temporarily uninstall it while configuring your
network. The firewall software may be blocking your network and even though
the firewall says it can be disabled, the disable feature often does not
work correctly.

Is any one able to inform me on how to create a home network using a wired
adsl modem/router that has a linksys access point WAP 54 G connected to
it.
I have managed to configure the access point to share the internet on the
laptop but I am bewildered as how to setup a home LAN to access my desktop
from the laptop computer.
Below is my configuration setup any help would be most welcome.
1. desktop computer with
XP home operating system
TI USB Remote NDIS Network Device Adapter
IConnect 621 ADSL modem/router connected via USB to desktop (wired
Not wireless)
Nil - Ethernet card/ports on this computer, only USB
2. laptop computer with
XP professional operating system
Intel(R)PRO/wireless3945ABG Net adapter
3. Linksys Access Point WAP54G version3,
purchased to share networkconnection wirelessly for laptop
and create a home network between the laptop and desktop.
This is connected to Ethernet port of IConnect 621 ADSL router
Lynksys access point -(manual settings as follows)
a. Mode: Mixed
b. Wireless Network Name: Personalized.
c. Channel: 11
d. SSID Broadcast: disabled
e. WEP 128 bit encryption.
f. XP Wireless Zero Configuration started on both computers
4. IConnect 621 ADSL modem/router
2 ports ( 1/USB and 1/Ethernet )
USB port connected to Desktop
Ethernet port connected to Access Point
1/ telephone line connection
Internet Protocol TCP/IP on both computers
Obtain IP address Automatically
Obtain DNS address Automatically
Desktop computer
IP Address 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway / DHCP server / DNS servers 192.168.1.254
Laptop wireless computer
