I've disabled Simple File Sharing on both PC's.
Is the account (non-Guest) properly activated for network access?
Identical,
non-blank password on both computers? All groups properly activated?

Thanks for the references. I've read thru them and checked to insure the
required services and settings are correct.
Still no difference.
I've got accounts with the same name and passwords on both pc's.
On the 'Server' - i.e., the pc on which I want to see the files, I've added
the account to Allow Network Access in Local Security Policy. The account
is not in the Deny Network Access. For yuks, I ran the command line command
to activate the user account.
I can print from the client to the 'server'. Windows Firewall is off. I am
running Symantec Client Security which includes a Firewall. But, it that
were the problem, I'd expect a message that I couldn't access the server,
not this funky userid/password thing.
Anything else you can think of?

Make sure that you don't have a misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewall,
or other security component. There are several other possibilities too,
and any
might be the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.
