Re: Chuck, Help! File sharing network issue

Chuck,

I've done as you suggested and disabled the un-needed protocols on
carolyncomputer, then I ran browstat on all 3 computers. The outputs from
browstat status are included, below, at the end of this message.

You wrote that carolyncomputer had 2 extra protocals, IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. I
only found, and uninstalled NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios. There was another NWLink
IPX/SPX listed, but the uninstall option for that was greyed out. After I
uninstalled the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios, the OTHER NWLink was no longer listed.

Additionally, following the links on your (excellent!) PChuck website, I dug
into my NetBIOS settings. All 3 computers have NetBIOS set to "Default". I
did not change that because I felt that troubleshooting should be done one
step at a time. :) However, I include that information in case it has a
bearing on the lack of filesharing access.

Finally, I am once again being called away for a couple of days. I'll check
back up on Tuesday. I really appreciate the help you are providing. Thank you.

Regards,
Ken

I have 3 computers in a home network, all running XP home. They are connected
via ethernet to a switch. The switch is connected to a router. The router
connects to my cable modem.

All 3 computers can use the internet separately. I can play games on my
local network against each computer.

The problem is I cannot access the shared folder on 2 of the 3 machines.
Each machine can access the same one, but that is the only machine with file
sharing access.

Also, "My Network Places" has migrated the folders from "Local Network" to
"The Internet". I don't know if this migration is linked to my access problem.

No machine needs any other machine to be on in order to browse the internet.

I've checked the obvious (to me) things and I'm stumped. I've included the
outputs from the following programs for each of the three computers: ipconfig
/all, browstat status, cpsserv, and net config - both server and workstation.
The computers are named "kensgateway", "kidscomputer", and "carolyncomputer".

Thank you for taking the time to look through this and help me out!

Ken

Start with CAROLYNCOMPUTER, with IPX/SPX and NetBEUI. Get rid of both!

But the fact that you have computers visible not in "Local Network" but "The
Internet" makes me think that you have a personal firewall issue. Both Norton
Internet Security and Zone Alarm will, if not configured properly, cause "My
Network Places" to show other computers on the LAN in "The Internet".

But get rid of excessive protocols first, then rerun browstat on all 3
computers. Browstat will be the best tool here.

Chuck,

Thank you for helping me with this. I've been called out of town, so I'll
have to wait a few days before I can do what you suggest. I'll bump this up
when I do so.

More information: I WAS running Norton's Systemworks 2006 on all 3 machines,
but after reading in several places about how that suite seems to cause
problems, I used the Norton SRT program to delete it from all machines. (Now
running Kaspersky AV.)

Again, thank you,

Ken

Thanks for the update, Ken. We'll be here when you get back.
