Re: Networking

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

HI

I've had a similar problem, so maybe the information I provide in my case
may help determine the cause and solution.

CONFIGURATION:
All 4 desktop computers are connected to the LAN via ethernet cards & RJ45
cables, and a laptop is occasionally plugged in the same way, ie no wireless
networking. Some printers are connected to the LAN directly via RJ45 cables,
while others are connected to the computers and shared that way. All
networked items go through data outlets to a patch panel which then connects
them to a hub. A modem/router is also plugged into the hub giving all PCs
access to the internet. IP addresses have been manually assigned. One
computer (the one we use for email) has Norton's Internet Security installed.

Print server 1 and Admin/email PCs are running Win2000.
Graphics PC is running WinXP.
Print server 2 is running Unix.
Laptop is running WinXP.

PROBLEM
The graphics PC had progressively deteriorated in performance over the last
2 months, causing Adobe programs to crash more frequently, and a Corel
program to malfunction completely. I reinstalled XP over the top of the
existing XP installation to try to repair the fault then reinstalled all the
Adobe and Corel programs. There has been significant improvement with the
Adobe programs but the Corel program is still not working.

Anyway, the main issue now is that I can't see any network components when I
try to go into My Network Places. I can still access the internet and print
to two of the three directly connected printers, but not the other one. I can
also access the other (admin and email) PC that had previously been mapped as
a network drive. The directly connected printers generally appear in a
"branch" of their own, separate from the workgroup that the computers are on.
I can then navigate to them to install them as network printers.

THINGS I'VE TRIED
I've tried "pinging" to the various PCs and printers successfully, except
for the one I'm having trouble with. I also can't ping to a Digital Video
Recorder that is plugged into the hub.

I've tried running the Network Setup Wizard on the graphics PC, and it seems
to have completed successfully, but nothing has changed in terms of seeing
the network items in My Network Places.

QUESTIONS
How can I see all the items My Network Places?
How can I access them - especially the printer?

PLEA FOR HELP
Please help! I'm hoping to avoid a full rebuild of the graphics PC because
it takes days to complete!

We have a small network of 3 Desktop PCs and a Laptop, something very strange
happened a couple of days ago which caused one of the PCs to wipe completely,
I have now re-installed most things but I can no longer connect to the
network for file or printer sharing through this PC although I can access the
internet as each PC is connected to a hub which is, in turn, connected to a
router. Any ideas?

Run the Network Setup Wizard, and tell it that the computer connects
to the Internet through a residential gateway (the Wizard's name for a
router).

If you tell the Wizard that the computer connects to the Internet
through a hub, it will block file and printer sharing.

Unfortunately this has not helped at all. Any other suggestions?

You're welcome.

Make sure that any firewall program (Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin,
ZoneAlarm, etc) is configured to allow access by other computers on
the local network. Note that some antivirus programs, such as Norton
Antivirus 2006, have firewall functions that need to be configured.

If that doesn't help, please provide more information about the
problem. The more you tell us, the more likely it is that someone can
help. For example:

Can the troublesome computer access other computers? Can other
computers access it?

How are you trying to connect to the network for file or printer
sharing on that computer?

What exactly happens when you do it?

If there's an error message, what does it say?
