Re: Folder and Printer Sharing ceased working

I have read both of the URL's you have referred me to.

I disabled the windows firewall as installion as I have a firewall in my
Linksys router(WAG54G) and this is the same router that I have been using for
over 18 months now and all worked until just recently.

I am not sure exactly when it stopped working as my wife had not tried to
access my computer or the shared Canon IP4000 printer connected to the USB
port for a while and mine was accessing hers OK so I did not have the need to
check existing facilities.

TCP/IP is a tool to measure ISP performance http://www.tcpiq.com/ I think
it uses the >NET framework but not sure. It's a great tool though!

I have a friend in Brisbane who also has the same problem. He has been
trying to slove it for some time.

We are both ex IT employees of Telstra in Australia so are fairly familiar
with networking (and no we don't know everything).

We both have installed Windows Live and both run TCP/IQ.

I will keep checking and running diagnostic tools but at first glance they
all look ok.

I used to have File Sharing and Printer Sharing between my PC and my wife’s
PC but all of a sudden it only half works. I run a small home network.

We are both running XP pro.

I can see & use all the folders etc on her PC but she cannot access my PC.

I can see the workgroup & PC name of my pc from her pc but no further. She
can print to the Linksys print server which services a Lexmark laser.

I use one PC as a backup for the other for certain data folders/files. For
example I will copy my mail data to hers and vice versa. We also printer
share the colour printer.

Yesterday she wanted to access the Photo Storage area on my pc to print some
photos on the colour printer shared on my pc and could not view or print.

If I look at My Network Places on her pc, I can drill down to the workgroup
and even to the name of my PC but when I try and double click on my pc name
it takes a long think and then tells me that “mycomputername” is not
accessible and to check with the admin for rights etc.

So being a good IT guy I asked myself to check and cannot see what is wrong.

I have “Simple File Sharing” Disabled so that I can use groups to grant what
access I like.

I have “Shared” Printers and folders and given permissions to the groups &
added users to these groups.

I have made the user names & passwords the same on both PC’s so that they
can access this without a login prompt.

I never get the login box by the way.

It all used to work in the past so something has changed. The only thing I
can remember installing since is Windows Live & TCP/IQ.

This all used to work!!

Ron,

One of the most common causes of your problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this
article with an open mind.

How recently in the past did it work? Maybe before applying security updates?
I don't recognise TCP/IQ.

Check the non-Guest setup on your computer.
