XP system loses web connectivity; help please!

Hi,
I'm hoping for some helpful advice here. I have a IBM Desktop computer
running Windows XP home edition SP2, with all patches and updates in
place. It has Norton Antivirus suite installed, updated and scanned
recently. It is part of a home network which consists of a Belkin
Wireless router (model F5D6231-4) hard wired to a SBC-DSL router. The
desktop is connected to the Belkin via CAT-5; there is a wireless
laptop in the network that works perfectly fine. I have also hard wired
another system to the network and it works fine as well.
The desktop system is OK externally (can get email through Outlook, can
access VPN) until IE is opened, then after surfing a few web pages it
can no longer ping the Belkin router gateway (192.168.2.1), although it
keeps its' IP address (192.168.2.90). Eventually if left on long
enough, the system finally loses its' IP address also and resorts to
the default 169.254.x.x. There is no rhyme or reason for the behavior
displayed (number of pages surfed, time, specific page that causes
connection drop). It requires a reboot to restore connectivity
(ipconfig release/renew does not work) which lasts until the next IE
session. Logging onto the system with a different profile does not make
a difference.
I have tried the following things in an attempt to fix the issue: new
NIC card, new CAT5 cable, tried static address rather than DHCP, online
virus scans using BitDefender and Trend Micro sites, malware scan with
SDFix utility, IE upgrade to v7.0, enable/disable 3rd party extensions
in IE, turned on/off Windows firewall, checked hosts files for
corruption, ran "netsh winsock reset" command, ran winsockxp fix
utility, selectively removed items from startup with msconfig, ran
network monitor utility looking for any unusual traffic from that
machine; all without success or any appreciable change in behavior.
If anyone has any other suggestions besides reformatting, I'd love to
hear them Thanks in advance!
