I am a dumb***. Since I use static IPs on my home network, I disable the
DHCP client service.

I did some more testing. I pluged my laptop directly to my cable modem and
it failed to obtain an IP. I also set my desktop to use DHCP and it also
failed to get an IP from my router and modem. They are both running XP Pro.
I have an older laptop that has XP Home on it that receives an IP via DHCP
from my router within a few seconds. I know I modified some settings on my
desktop, but I don't think I have done anythong on my newer laptop (outside
of requiring CTRL ALT DELETE to log on). I appreciate your help.

I have my home network setup using static static IPs. I went to a business
conference and changed my settings to use DHCP for both my wireless and
ethernet NICs. However, both hang on acquiring network address and do not
even receive an AIPA IP. I also turned off my firewall and
uninstalled/reinstalled the NICs with no change. . My wireless card is a a
Gigabyte GN-WIOIGS and ethernet is made by Realtek. I am using the Windows
Live OneCare suite. The only Windows Update I have not done is for IE 7.0.
I appreciate any assistance that is offered.
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Network Connection and there Right click your
connection and select Properties.
On the network connection properties Right click TCP/IP and select
Properties or you can click properties Button on the bottom of the window,
there check that the Laptop is getting Automatically IP and DNS click
Advanced and see if there is any thing under DNS or WINS to uncheck.
Again Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Connection hen on the IE Properties
click Connections Tab.
Click on LAN settings and uncheck the Proxy Check box settings and select
Automatically detect settings.
Click Apply then OK to close the IE Properties window.
Then Open a Run Command and type these command in:
CMD.exe click [OK].
On the Prompt command type: ipconfig /flushdns Hit Enter.
Then type on the new command prompt: ipconfig /renew or release Hit
Enter.
Again type: netsh winsok reset Hit Enter then type in :exit to close the
command prompt window.
Reboot your computer/Laptop and Try to connect, if you have Wireless then
you need to authenticate to the network you want to connect to if it using
authentication.
HTH.
Let us know.
