We have 2 computers on a network at work, both using XP PRO.
I just got a new computer, and initially, I didn't set up the administrator
account, and file sharing worked fine.
When I did set up an adminstrator account, I was prompted to make my files
and folders private or not. I chose to make them private, which may have
been the start of the problem. Like I said, before I did this, files were
being shared just fine.
Our documents are located on my computer (in a completely separate folder
outside of the generic Documents and Settings folder- c:\Data\Docs\). I
made sure to set the folder to be shared and to be changable by users on the
network. However, now there is a problem with sharing over the network. My
boss's computer is able to read and change docs in that folder, UNLESS I make
any revisions to a file, or create any new files in that folder. If he
tries to access one of my modified documents, he gets the message "This
document is un use or is specified as read-only. You may edit the document,
but you must save it with a new name. Continue? " But when you click,
"Yes", the message "Access Denied: You do not have rights to do this." I am
completely out of the file and no one is accessing it at that point, but this
message still comes up. On the folder, "Everyone" has permission to "change"
or "read" the files.
I've tried a variety of things through Microsoft's Help, but to no avail. I
eventually turned off the simple sharing, and made sure the permissions
looked correct, and they do to me, but I can't tell for sure, because
obviously something isn't working properly. I've even now set the parent
folder (Data) to share too, but it still doesn't help. Any time I change a
file, my boss's computer gives him the same notices.
Does anyone have any advice? I'm getting very desperate!! Thanks for any
ideas you could give me.
Anna,
Remember, if you're using Simple File Sharing, you have a workgroup. SFS
doesn't work in a domain. And turning SFS "OFF" doesn't disable access in any
way, it enables possible administrative (non-Guest) access.

Are you using the administrator account? Is your boss using a Guest account to
access your computer? If so, there's one problem. When you edit a file, it
becomes administrative owned, and the Guest account can't access it. You need
to balance access - either both of you use Guest, or both use non-Guest, access.
If that's not it, check file and folder permissions.
