no the Netgear is fine. it works fine when I have it connected in my
room to the DSL modem. But whenever I unplug it and try to plug the
rest of the network in without the DSL, they all go dead. I'm so lost.

Now I have not tried utilizing a crossover cable between the Netgear
Router and the 2Wire Gateway, but I am having a more serious problem
now. I realized today after another go at it that when I disconnect
all the computers from the 2Wire and plus them into the Netgear
instead, all the computers read that a cable is unplugged. This might
be part of the issue. Any ideas?

The second thing you need is to turn off all routing features on the
Linksys
router, otherwise you will have divided your network into two physical

Ok I have a bit of a complicated situation and have gotten so
frustrated trying to get it to work properly. I have googled all over
and on all different variations of the topic with no real help. So
here it goes:

I currently have DSL service with SBC Yahoo DSL. The modem that they
provided is a 2Wire Gateway. The model of this gateway is a 1701HG
Gateway. The connection is obviously PPPoE. This unit is set by
default to have DHCP enabled as well.

The house is pre-wired for a network. So there are 5 rooms with jacks.
These 5 jacks have the cables in the basement by the 1701HG. So I
have 4 out of 5 of connections active since the 1701HG only has 4
ports.

The next piece on the network is a Netgear RangeMax Wireless Router
WPN824. This router is in my room (1 of the 4 connections from the LAN
ports on the 1701HG). The cable to the WPN824 is plugged into port 4
and my xbox, desktop, and laptop are connected to ports 1-3. The
Internet/WAN/Uplink port is empty. If I manually set the router to
DHCP Off and that my connection does not require username and pass and
to receive everything from ISP the network works. I can see everyone
on the network, I can access internet on all computers.

The problem comes from the new design I am looking to create in the
household. I am looking to create a Linux NAS box that will serve up
some storage and also be a print server as well. Since I will be
seperating my main storage off of my computer to this NAS I would like
to better secure my network. The 1701HG just does not cut it. I need
the WPN824 to be the DHCP, Firewall, and basically the master Router on
the network.

So I moved the WPN824 downstairs to the basement with the 1701HG. I
set the 1701HG to not DHCP. I then plugged in the WPN824 via
Internet/WAN/Uplink port to the 1701HG via LAN port 1. The netgear
software did it's thing in detecting the connection, asked for
user/pass, and completed successfully. Now I have a 1701HG with no
DHCP, a static IP for itself, and a connection to the internet being
shared with the Netgear WPN824. Plugged in my laptop to the WPN824 and
connects fine. The problem is that the rest of the household
connections do not work when plugged in to the other LAN ports on the
Netgear.

The final trouble is also in my room I am trying to use a old Linksys
Router as a switch. BEFW11S4. I have an xbox, desktop, and laptop in
my room and need to split the jack coming in. So I try to set the
router with No DHCP, static IP, and plug the jack from the wall into
the LAN port 4. The other devices in my room also connected to the LAN
ports 1-3. No luck. Any geniuses' who could potentially help me with
this situation? I think the main problem is actually the connection
between the Netgear and the wall jacks. I figure if I can plug my
laptop directly in and work, why can't I plug my laptop on through a
wall jack and still work? And if I can get that far, then I just need
to figure out how to configure the router to cooperate with the other
router. Thanks!
