There is the "solution of last resort", install NEtBEUI and add it as a Sharing protocol.

Thank you. I do have Netbeui ready to load, but I'm not sure I want to use the last resort yet, since there has to be some logical answer to this problem--it's the principle of the thing.
I went through Chuck's steps again--all of them--and couldn't find an answer.
Here is the Browstat result, which seems to be OK--the error #5, he says, is normal. But maybe not.
