Machine 1/Laptop= win xp pro; Machine 2/Desktop= win xp home; Wireless dlink
G604T.
They used to be able to share everything ............ but NOW for some
reason only the Desktop can see and access files on Laptop; Laptop can see
the Desktop but won't show anything except the Desktop's name.
Have tried numerous reboots for each machine. Pings between are fine. I can
also ping using the pc names as opposed to their ip addresses.
Whenever (Laptop) I try to add a network printer (connected to the Desktop)
it asks for guest (greyed out) password and refuses. Guest is disabled on
both. When enabled briefly (with passwords set) it made no difference. How
did the guest account become flavour of the month?- it's disabled on both
machines.....
Both machines have access to the internet.
Both are on the same workgroup (no domain).
When the printer is connected to the laptop, the desktop sees it and shares
it but when the printer is connected to the desktop, the laptop does not see
it.

Any help at all appreciated!!!!!

XP Home Edition uses the Guest account to validate all requests for
networked access by other computers on the network. Follow these
steps on the desktop computer to get it working:

1. Enable networked access using the Guest account:

a. Open a command prompt window (Start > Run > cmd)
b. Type the command "net user guest /active:yes" and press Enter.

2. Remove any network password from the Guest account:

a. Click Start > Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
c. Click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password.
e. Click OK without entering a new password.

The Guest account settings in Control Panel > User Accounts have
nothing to do with networking. They determine whether you can log in
as Guest at the local keyboard.
