Re: Localhost problem

Tried //localhost without the http: and Athlon did not go to localhost
folder, neither did P4 HT.
If this is a XP SP2 problem, then maybe Microsoft should be contacted.

yes, but did you try \\localhost alone (not with http) - on my Athlon it is
working but the folder is empty.

Thanks for verifying that the Athlon works for localhost.
The folder on the local computer opens the start iis page.
On the networked computer http://computer_name/filename works.
Where the computer_name is the name of the Athlon.
The localhost folder comes back as "under construction",
if not set up fully, but the "filename" is located in /inetpub/wwwroot/

I have checked it - it's "working" but did you see any shared folder
(because when i type \\localhost it's empty folder :) ).

localhost problem does not occur on Athlon 64 PC with XP SP2. P4 HT PC
on
same network running XP SP2 has localhost problem. Athlon can not
access
P4
Default Website as localhost, but P4 can access Athlon's localhost
Default
Website-- in IIS.

Dunno why but you are correct - \\localhost opens an explorer window
in
Windows Server 2003, but returns the expected error in XP SP2.
Applying
patch 884020 makes no difference.

Doug,
i have seen it but, as you can see it applies only to (as
Microsoft
said):. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
. Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
. Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Developer Edition

and as i wrote - it's working on Windows Server 2003 (i have
checked
it
on
Standard and Enterprise) but didn't work on Windows XP SP2.

Why ?

Well, it doesn't work on NT or Win2k, so I wouldn't expect it to
work
on
XP
or Windows Server 2003 either:

Hi,
i didn't find any information why \\localhost doesn't work
on
Windows
XP
(when i ping localhost everything looks fine IP 127.0.0.1 is
returned
and
all 4 pings are ok). I have checked all my IP settings, DNS,
WINS,
hosts
file, etc. All what i can check seems to be ok. I have installed
new
Windows
XP SP2 (without any KB - i was thinking that it should be a KB
problem)
but
it's also not working. I have checked \\localhost on Windows
Server
2003
SP1
and ... voila works fine. I do some investigation and check
information
in
technet, microsoft site and google ... found nothing about that
(or
i
have
missed something). Could someone tell me why \\localhost doesn't
work
on
Windows XP SP2 (and i have forgotten, Windows firewall was
turned
off
on
all
my test machines).
When i put \\127.0.0.1 in explorer (or \\computer-netbios-name)
then
local
shares are displayed, but \\localhost doesn't work - strange ...
The
error
is (Windows cannot find "\\localhost". Check the spelling and
try
again,
or
try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then
clicking
Search) .

Does anyone know why it's not working on Windows XP SP2 ?

Thanks,
Dariusz Hoszowski
