Re: No internet/no file-sharing/no recognition of network on host computer

Okay, the problem is solved. Here's what helped:

1. I triple-checked for firewalls. Lo and behold, it turns out that my
new computer came with a Norton firewall installed as part of the
package. The tutorials I found at http://www.leeindy.com/ helped me
configure ZoneAlarm and Norton Internet Security to allow networking,
file-sharing and internet access. Further scanning of old posts in this
group let me know that "Internet worm protection" in Norton Antivirus
works like a firewall so I turned that off.

2. I installed NetworkMagic. This looks like one heck of a useful
interface. I don't know that it was essential to solving my problem
because I still didn't get file sharing or internet service until...

3. I followed PChuck's advice (http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/) on
making sure that IP settings are the same on both computers. The
wireless adapter on Computer B was set for a fixed IP address, whereas
everything else was configured for DHCP. I changed this, and that
turned everything loose.

One more word on NetworkMagic - both Belkin's interface and WZC told me
that I was connected to my network when I couldn't get internet or
filesharing. NetworkMagic inspected the same connection and was
upfront about the fact that I wasn't connected. Accuracy in software is
a wonderful thing.

Take care and thanks,

Jon
