Re: Localhost problem

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Doug,
i have seen it but, as you can see it applies only to (as Microsoft
said):. Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
. Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition
. Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 Standard Edition
. Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 4.0 Developer Edition

and as i wrote - it's working on Windows Server 2003 (i have checked it on
Standard and Enterprise) but didn't work on Windows XP SP2.

Why ?

Well, it doesn't work on NT or Win2k, so I wouldn't expect it to work on
XP
or Windows Server 2003 either:

Hi,
i didn't find any information why \\localhost doesn't work on Windows
XP
(when i ping localhost everything looks fine IP 127.0.0.1 is returned and
all 4 pings are ok). I have checked all my IP settings, DNS, WINS, hosts
file, etc. All what i can check seems to be ok. I have installed new
Windows
XP SP2 (without any KB - i was thinking that it should be a KB problem)
but
it's also not working. I have checked \\localhost on Windows Server 2003
SP1
and ... voila works fine. I do some investigation and check information
in
technet, microsoft site and google ... found nothing about that (or i
have
missed something). Could someone tell me why \\localhost doesn't work on
Windows XP SP2 (and i have forgotten, Windows firewall was turned off on
all
my test machines).
When i put \\127.0.0.1 in explorer (or \\computer-netbios-name) then
local
shares are displayed, but \\localhost doesn't work - strange ... The
error
is (Windows cannot find "\\localhost". Check the spelling and try again,
or
try searching for the item by clicking the Start button and then clicking
Search) .

Does anyone know why it's not working on Windows XP SP2 ?

Thanks,
Dariusz Hoszowski
