computer freezes when trying to setup wifi router

I have a Netgear WGR614 v6 and have tried so many times to set it up
with my internet connection and laptop. I have Windows XP Media Center
2004. I have an ADSL connection (I'm in Europe for a year).
So I run the setup CD I got with the router, and at the step where it
says to turn off the router and disconnect it from its power supply, my
computer freezes EVERY TIME. Even if I pull out the ethernet cable
either from the modem or my laptop, my computer freezes. If I try to
seup the router without using the Netgear setup CD, I get the same
problem, the laptop freezes.
I need to know: how do I setup my wireless router to use with my
internet connection?
I called up Netgear customer suppoort, and said that the problem is
with my computer. I have antivirus software that is up-to-date, and I
scan my system almost everyday (I assume I am virus free, if that makes
any difference).
Thank you to anyone who can provide me with any input and help!
I have never used these newsgroups, so I am not sure that if anyone
replies that I will get a response in my e-mail. So I would appreciate
a response to my e-mail as well if I won't automatically get your
response in my e-mail.
