Home Networking Problem: Wired pc rarely connects, wireless laptop connects

Hello all,
I have Home Networking set up through EarthLink (ADSL). My desktop pc
is brand new, running Win XP Pro; wireless notebook computer running
the same. DSL modem is by Zyxel, wireless router is a Linksys WRT54G.
The problem is, for about the past 2 weeks I usually cannot connect to
the Internet using the desktop pc; however I can always connect via the
wireless laptop. It's very puzzling because I have not changed any
settings on the pc. I've double-and-triple checked all the physical
connections from phone jack to pc to router & modem, etc. My network
card is supposedly fine. We did have a power outage a few weeks ago but
I have gotten the pc to connect a few times since power was restored.
It's just not consistent at all. Anyone have any suggestions for me?
Thanks in advance!
