How to connect 2 PCs for gaming

I have a Netgear ADSL router with built in firewall and I use ZoneAlarm on
my WindowsXP Pro installation. My friend, in another town also has a netgear
(different model) router with hardware firewall and a cable modem. He has
McAfee Security Center with Personal Firewall - latest version.

I take my laptop round to his and we both like to play Stronghold Crusader
amongst other games across the network, so we have it cleared in our
software firewalls, but we would also like to play remotely through the
above equipment. The games won't connect, so we suspect we need to change
some firewall settings probably in the hardware firewall. We don't really
know where to start and a web search for material has just baffled us with
jargon. Is there a simple way to get our 2 games to 'talk'.

Thanks.
