Re: How to network two separate facilities about 1000 feet apart

Frankly, my life is too short to mess with fiber optic stuff - I have a
contractor do it. Ethernet I don't mind working with because the tools and
connectors are cheap and if you get the connection wrong you just clip off a
couple inches of cable and try again. Fiber requires some fairly
specialized tools and a lot of patience to get a good connection.

Fiber optic cable has a distance limit of 500 to 5000 yards, depending on
the equipment and type of fiber used. You can probably do this pretty
cheaply with standard multi-mode fiber and a couple of fiber
transceivers,
one at each end.

Hi,
We need to connect computers between facilities separated by about
1000
feet. Can anyone offer sound strategies for doing that? Running new
cable
with switches and routers IS an option, but what kind, and how? I
understand
CAT5 has a 300 foot limit? Thanks in advance. - ARL

Excellent idea Richard! I wouldn't have thought of that. Do you have any
idea of costs for cabling and termination equipment? - Alan
