Re: Can Ping IP # But Can't Browse

Have you tried power cycling your router? Sometimes they seem to get lost and
a quick power down/power up reboot fixes things.

One more piece of info.... I show a connection on my PC (through the
network connections screen). I open it and it shows it as enabled and
sending/receiving. FYI

Sounds like your DNS server from your router is not giving your computer a
IP address for whatever reason.

the 169.254.x.x is a private automatically assigned IP address and you won't
be able to browse the internet or navigate your network.

You can try assigning yourself a IP address manually. To do this depending
on the brand of your router, the IP numbering scheme is different from one
brand to another. Maybe you can post what brand your router is and someone
can further assist you.

Microsoft router's typically give out 192.168.2.x numbers
Linksys router's typically give out 192.168.1.x numbers

Just ran more tests and learned that I CANNOT ping. The ping IP I was
using was a 169.254.x.x which, as I now understand, is one that is
shown when the IP is not getting automatically assigned. So I can't
Ping and I can't browse. Hope someone has some ideas for me to try....
I'm at a loss.

Thanks again!

I am running a desktop PC and 2 PCs on a home network. Everything has
been running fine until this morning when I got up to discover my
desktop (my main work PC!) had rebooted itself during the night. When
I went to open Firefox.. I got the dreaded DNS Error page; same thing
with IE6. My other 2 PCs (both laptops..one on wireless) can access
the Internet and browse fine. My desktop is running WinXP Pro SP2 with
all the latest updates. I can ping a numerical IP address but not
"www.somesite.com". Here is what I have tried so far:

ran ipconfig /flushdns and /renew /registerdns commands ... no luck

Ran netsh winsock reset catalog and netsh int ip commands ... no luck

deleted IE and FireFox completely through the Add/remove
programs...then reinstalled fresh copy... no luck

exported and deleted winsock and winsock 2 from registry, reloaded them
then reinstalled TCP/IP over itself... no luck

installed and ran "winsockfixxp.exe" ... no luck

reinstalled IE straight from the WinXP disk ... no luck

restored all default browser settings, dumped cache and temp files ...
no luck

did a system restore to 2 days ago (when I know it was last working)
... restore was successful but still not able to browse

have checked my NIC card and drivers ... they seem to be working and up
to date

And, yes, I have unplugged and double-checked all routers, DSL modem,
NIC cables, etc just to make sure

.... as you can imagine I am ready to get the hammer out!! LOL At
this point I thought it would be easier to just reinstall WinXP,
however my version does not have SP1 or SP2 therefore I can't use my
disk to reinstall since the current version I'm running is "newer" than
the disk I have.

CAN ANYONE OUT THERE HELP??

Thanks
Tee
