Hi Chuck. I have been doing alot of reading into the info you sent. I have a
question. How would you go about finding out if a 3rd party firewall were on
the computer? When checking in security it just has windows firewall on (both
computers).
Phil,
If you suspect that you have an unknown personal firewall, you're going to have
to look in several lists, for unrecognised entries.
Look in active processes.

Look in startup processes.

Look in LSP / Winsock.

But use the other diagnostics that I suggested. They should narrow things down
a bit.
I think I might be messing something up. I downloaded browstat to my docs,
extracted with winzip to my docs. I opened the command prompt and typed
browstat status >c:\browstat.txt and it said "browstat is not recognized as
an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" The same
message when I tried browstat listwfw >>c:\browstat.t. When I tried notepad,
the notepad did open. Where might I be missing something?
Phil,
That's a simple matter. Note my article, with reference to the Path.

Hi Chuck. Using the system wizard I added c:\utility at the end exactly as shown. I created a folder in my docs called utility and put the browstat file in it. When I open the run, cmd it opens a command box with heading "C:windows\system32\cmd.exe"In the black portion it has C:\documents and settings\Phil> at that point I
type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" and I still get is not recognized as
internal or external command. Here is a copy of my new path
"%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\DLLShared;C:\Utility". I have read and
re-read the article but am embarrassed to say I am still missing something.
Please note I am trying all this on my system before getting on the phone
long distance with my son to help him.
Thank you again.
Phil
OK, Phil, no problem.
What folder is browstat.exe in? You got Path right. If you put browstat.exe
into "C:\OtherFolder", type "C:\OtherFolder\browstat status" to test it, then
"C:\OtherFolder\browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" to run it.
When looking in the windows explorer the browstat file is in
Mycomputer>local disk C>documents and settings>and in docs and settings their
is (all users), (phil) and the folder I made (utility) The all users and Phil
have a + sign before them, the utility does not.
You're half way there, Phil. If you'll reread the Path article, you'll note
that you want to put the software into the folder added to the path. Since you
added "C:\Utility" to the Path, you need to move browstat.exe into "C:\Utility".
Hi Chuck. I did put browstat in the utility folder when I created the
folder. With that said i still have the problem.
Phil,
What is the precise path that Utility is in? Your earlier message said
the browstat file is in Mycomputer>local disk C>documents and settings>and in
docs and settings their is (all users), (phil) and the folder I made (utility)
That sounds like its "C:\>documents and settings\utility". But the Path
addition puts it as "C:\utility". Do you see the difference?
I would say the path is C:\documents and settings\utility. In explorer I
open the + on my computer, open the + on local C, open the + on docs and
settings and it is indented below with no plus sign before it just below the
all users and Phil. So hopefully I am assuming correctly. When I open the
command from start and run, inside it already has "C:\Documents and
settings\Phil> then I typed the browstat command. I also tried changing the
utility location to inside the +Phil under docs and settings. That reacted
the same. I know I must be very close but a minute detail that I am missing
is making a world of difference, but i'm willing to keep plugging if you
don't mind it. I'm always up to being schooled and learning something.
Thank you,
Phil
My path is definately C:\documents and settings\utility, so does that mean I
need to go to the variable value and change it from C:\utlity to C:\documents
and settings\utility? When I open the cmd why does it have C:\documents and
settings\Phil> ? Isn't that already the wrong path?
Phil,
You can put your custom utilities wherever you like. You just put them where
the Path entry says they are. I use "C"\Utility" because it's short and easy to
remember. You can also change the folder referenced when the command window is
opened. Just be consistent.

So sorry Chuck, still not getting it. On the command when I open the box it
says C:\documents and settings\Phil> I the typed c:\utlity\browstat status
c:\browstat.txt then hit enter. Said the directory name is invalid. Itried it without the c:\utility before the browstat and it says not an
internal or external etc......
Thank you,
Phil
Keep trying, Phil. Move browstat.exe into C:\Utility folder. Then run
"browstat status". If that works do "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt", then
"notepad c:\browstat.txt".

Hi Chuck. the browstat is in the utility folder. it is 40kb. when i look at
the properties so i'm sure it is in there. When readind and article it says
when you type cmd and the box opens it said be a new command box with the
computer name. When I do it it has the heading of
"C:\windows\system3cmd.exe" Could that be where the problem is for this not
working?
OK, Phil. Try running it as "c:\utility\browstat status".
