Ethernet OK Wifi KO

My son's laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400. XP SP2. Router is Netopia 3342.
Problem: when connected through Ethernet things are OK. When on wifi, the internet connection works for a short while and then goes dead (Firefox and IE alike). When he turns on and off the router and reboots the computer the same thing happens.

any ideas?
