o.k.-that was it.
My most recent update of McAfee Security Center included a firewall.
I had to change the firewall settings to add the IP address of PC1 as a
trusted computer.
Then everything worked like a charm
The PC2 printer showed up automatically as a PC1 computer.

The most likely problem is that a firewall program (Norton, McAfee,
PC-cillin, ZoneAlarm, etc) on PC2 is blocking access from PC1.

Note that some recent antivirus programs (Norton, PC-cillin, and
possibly others) include firewall components. For example, Norton
Antivirus 2006 has "Internet Worm Protection".

Configure any firewall program to allow access by other computers on
the local network.
