I've made a post about this problem a few weeks ago but
after having followed advice, I'm still no better off.
Hopefully I can eleborate on the problem.

I have 2 computers:
HUMUNGOUS with WinXP Pro SP2 with adsl connection.
FRED with WinXP Home SP2 connected to HUMUNGOUS via a
crossover cable.

Local Area Connection Status on both machines shows
activity
between them.
I've run the WinXP Home Office setup on both systems.
I'm using static IP addresses of 192.168.0.1 (HUMUNGOUS)
&
192.168.0.2 (FRED).
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0
There is no default gateway on HUMUNGOUS.
Default gateway on FRED is 192.168.0.1
Preferred DNS server is 192.168.0.1 (HUMUNGOUS) & the
Alternate DNS server is 10.1.1.1 (my ISPs DNS server).
Network name is MSHOME
I have Zonealarm running however the problem isn't
resolved
by stopping it.

AFAIK, the 2 machines should be networking together,
however
I cannot establish network shareing from either computer
or
internet access from the 2nd computer.

From FRED I can only see MSHOME but not any shared
folders.
From HUMUNGOUS I can see it's own shared folders, but
there's no sign of FRED.

What am I missing?

I assume that you've enabled Internet Connection Sharing
on
HUMUNGOUS's Internet connection. Configuring FRED with
an IP address,
default gateway, and DNS server isn't enough.

I think that the free version of ZoneAlarm is
incompatible with ICS.
If ZoneAlarm is causing problems, just stopping it isn't
enough. You
have to un-install ZoneAlarm, then go to Start | Run |
Msconfig and
disable any remnants that it leaves behind on the Startup
and Services
tabs. Enable the Windows Firewall on HUMUNGOUS before
un-installing
ZoneAlarm.

Bingo, we're on. Having resolved those problems can you
recomend any 3rd party firewalls that are compatible with
ICS? I don't consider the Windows Firewall to be adequate
as
I have no control over what it will & won't let through.

You're welcome. I'm sorry, but I don't have experience
using anything
but the Windows Firewall (which I find quite adequate)
with ICS. You
can open ports in the Windows Firewall to allow people on
the Internet
to access servers on your computers. Is that the type of
control that
you want?

According to www.zonelabs.com , ZoneAlarm Professional is
compatible
with ICS on the host computer. You can get a free 15-day
trial
version here:
