HELP ME VERY FRUSTRATED!!!

OK, compose yourself. This problem can have many causes, but they are all well
known here.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this
article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

Hi Chuck

I read through the links you supplied in your reply on my post in the
Microsoft newsgroups. I tried few things and checked other links from these
pages you supplied. I have the following information for you as I still can’t
figure this thing out!! (That’s why I went to programming instead of
networking at Tafe after Cert 3 !!!!). I have provided as much information as
I can think of to help you help me!!

General

I have enabled netbios over tcp/ip in both connections before running the
ipconfig /all and browstat commands.

When I ran through the wizards on both machines got different ip/sm/dg in
properties:

The laptop was set to auto obtain IP. IP = 192.168.0.3 / subnet mask =
255.255.255.0 / default gateway = 192.168.0.2.

The PC had set itself to use the following IP. IP = 192.168.0.1 / subnet
mask = 255.255.255.0 / default gateway = blank. While the settings like this
there was an internet gateway connection for PC in laptop’s network
connections.

I tried setting PC to obtain automatically and end up with limited or no
connectivity error.

Then I tried setting PC and Laptop to manual ip addresses but then get no
gateway connection on laptop. So I have left the properties to how the
machines set them.

PC / Host

Win XP Pro – just installed SP2 for IT developers

Running on fat32 file system

Newly installed 3com Ethernet adapter

New 5m Crossover cable joining the 2

PC is host and has cable broadband internet connection

PC didn’t have SP2 but when couldn’t get peer to peer network going properly
thought this may have something to do with and installed it.

Issue didn’t change with network when installed SP2, but I cannot enable the
firewall – it’s all greyed out and connections are partly greyed out. I get
message at top of screen in blue panel saying “For your security, some
settings are disabled in group policy”.

On the PC there is no firewall I can find apart from the newly installed
Windows one. I do have installed for internet security, AVG Free Edition
antivirus and Spybot Search & Destroy.

I can access Laptop’s shareddocs folder from PC and copy to the laptop fine.

Added Everyone to local security policy / user rights assignment / access
this computer from the network.

In local security policy / local policies / security options I disabled
Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only
