Re: telnet

When I telnet into my Windows XP Pro system I can't see my shared folders.
My setup is as follows:

Machine A (Windows) has a folder. The folder is shared with the Workgroup.

Machine B (Windows) accesses the shared the folder as drive S:. When
logging into Machine B, and opening a command prompt the drive is visible
and available.

Machine C (Unix) logs into machine B via telnet. The "S:" drive isn't
there. Doing a
"net use" from inside the telnet session shows the shares correctly, but
shows them as unavailable.

I'm not really sure how to proceed. I ran this by the
"windowsxppro.general" group and no one had the answer.

BTW: I'm doing this because various bueraucratic and security restrictions
will only allow telnet type access through our firewalls.

Actually, you got a lot of answers in the xp.general group but you didn't
come back with any response to them. When you telnet into a machine, it is
as if you are sitting at that machine controlling it. You can run programs
on it, etc. You will not "see" any shares because that isn't what telnet
does.

If you want to "see" and access shares from a Unix box, you need to set up
Samba.

You were asked exactly what you wanted to do with the shared resources on
the XP box and you never responded. Answer that question and you'll be able
to get focused help.

If you just want to transfer data, you can use something like ssh and PuTTY
(Windows):
