Isn't this a default address selected from those assigned to Microsoft for
use in this particular situation?

Inability to find a DHCP server can come from either of several problems.
# Lack of connectivity.
# Connectivity, but no DHCP server.
# Connectivity, but the DHCP server is busy or not working.

The 169.254.x.x is an APIPA address, assigned by Windows when it doesn't get a
return from a DHCP request.

Can you tell me how I get the DHCP enabled on the host PC? As says it's not
enabled, yet ThuyTran's is enabled, would this make a difference? Thanks

The setting "DHCP" means the DHCP client is on. The Network Setup Wizard will
take care of that.

Is 81m111ad the "host computer"? Your terminology is a bit vague. Let's start
by having you run the Network Setup Wizard on both computers. When you run it on
81m111ad (assuming that's the "host computer"), select
This computer connects directly to the Internet. The other computers on my
network connect to the Internet through this computer.

When you run it on ThuyTran, select
This computer connects to the Internet through another computer on my network or
through a residential gateway.

Then rerun "ipconfig /all" on both, and post updated. And please learn how to
copy and paste.

Chuck, I have still been unable to get the other 'ipconfig /all' yet, but
did try to run the network setup wizard, but this host computer just would
not install it, just kept saying it would take time to transfer with the one
computer icon going towards the other one, gave it 20 mins, nothing
happened, infact the only way to stop it was to do Ctrl+Alt+delete, as the
cancel was blanked out as well as OK. Plus this computer would not shut
down correctly, as I had to disable the Firewall, I'd recently added, as
it was causing problems on the internet only on the administrator account,
gets to 'Windows is shutting down' but freezes here, won't shut down, have
to press the re-set button, which then couldn't complete the disable of the
Firewall on Msconfig. However tried again and it worked, but still had to
shut down with the reset button. Any idea on this, I will enter this
problem in the relevant section, incase you do not want to sort this out for
me. So as I said I have not run the setup wizard on any again. Gave up on
it last night. Just wanted to keep you informed of my lack of progress.

OK, let's start over. We need a complete "ipconfig /all" from manchest-56c115.
# Open a command window.
# Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt", and hit Enter.
# Type "notepad c:\ipconfig.txt", and hit Enter.
# Email c:\ipconfig.txt, or copy the text from the file, from Notepad. Your
choice.
# Copy the text contents, complete and unedited (not by hand please), and paste
into your next message.

You're going to have to work on the computers in question. We can't diagnose
the problems with you telling me that you don't have access. And you're going
to have to post a complete and easily readable "ipconfig /all" log from each
computer. So far, only 81m111ad appears complete, and none of them is readable.

Then you're going to have to check the Sitecom network switch (where did you get
that), or consider getting a reliable router or switch at your local computer
store. With all computers connected to the switch / router, does the switch /
router indicate connections to each computer?

Once you verify connection to each of the 3 computers from the router / switch,
you need to run the Network Setup Wizard on ThuyTran and manchest-56c115.

Neither one, from viewing the "ipconfig /all" (what there is anyway) shows signs
of proper network connectivity. Please review in detail my article on ipconfig,
and on providing diagnostics in general, and understand what you're missing by
hand typing this information.

Sorry, have checked back and realise I have missed the Auto configuration IP
address, sent it all again (per below). Yes, I do know how to copy text
into Notepad, but the 2 client (ThuyTran & manchest-56c115) computers, not
able to save once in Notepad to a source I can then copy and paste into this
thread! Not without copying onto a CD, as no floppy disk on their
computers, as no access to host computer to copy to, it having the floppy
disk and internet access.

Don?t know how I check the Sitecom Network Switch, it has green lights
flashing to the computers in question and a red one for the mains. Bought
from a firm called Maplin Electronics, website: www.maplin.co.uk recently
brand new, replaced when this problem appeared. I have 2 more houses using
this Sitecom network switch for up to 7 computers, 6 clients & the host PC,
working fine. However I will wait and see if you can give me more info.,
now you have the IP address, per below.

OK, you're doing a bit better here. The bottom line, though, is that neither
manchest-56c115 nor ThuyTran are getting DHCP settings from 81m111ad. They are
both getting APIPA settings.

So I'm sure that Sitecom switches are legit equipment, but since I don't know
anything about them, you'll have to be patient while I see if anything is
available on the web about them. If you got a manual, you might try reading
that. After you read the above article.
