Hi Nelson,
Thanks for the response, you nailed the problem man !!
It was indeed the broadband software that was causing the problem. I
was using a software called the Cyberroam client for using my
broadband, i called my service provider and asked him to grant me
access without the software and viola ..after uninstalling the software
and restarting the system i was able to use my VPN..ah FINALLY!!

In my opinion, it would help to review what software you installed
recently. In my case my service provider provided an update for their
broadband login software. It could also be due to updates in the
antivirus software - I remember reading from some post that F-Secure
latest update had a problem.
