The XP SP2 firewall is pretty good. Probably, the ZoneLabs firewall has
more feature's which may or may not be of use to you and it may provide
better protection. You should not run both. If the machine works with
ZoneLabs enabled, I would stick with it.

Thanks Doug, that was it.

ZoneLabs firewall was the culprit. As suggested, I reinstalled it and
things
started working just half way in the installation of this software. Once
completed, I was able to connect to internet, ping everything. So things
are
back to normal as before upgrade.

For now I have stopped it, disabled it and exit out of it (I have not
de-installed it yet). And still things are working fine.

Do you know is there any advantage of running his firewall given that XP
has
its own firewall? Can we run both XP and ZhoneLabs firewall together, is
it
advisable?

Thanks for all your help.

Yes - this problem could be related to the prior ZoneLabs installation -
this kind of software can be notoriously difficult to remove and partial
removal can cause various problems. If possible try reinstalling the
product and then use its native uninstaller to remove it.

Also, try using a direct connection to the modem again - set TCP/IP to
automatic for everything and shut down the computer. Disconnect power
to
the modem and wait several minutes. Then repower the modem, connect and
boot the computer.

Doug,

I tried all this and nothing worked. I still have the same problem.

1. Configured IE as per step 1, 2 & 3 below.

2. Ping 4.2.2.1 fails

3. Ping yahoo.com and yahoo.com 80 fails

I initially had this computer connected behind a Belkin wireless
router
but
now I have it directly connected to my cable modem.

4. Having DHCP as source for IP address, I tried to ping my own IP
address
(that ipconfig shows for me) and even this does not work.

5. I don't have static IP address from my ISP but I still configured
it
using the IP address I got from them when in DHCP mode but this also
didn't
make any difference.

One other thing I want to mention, before I upgraded to XP, I had a
software
firewall (Zonelab Integrity) installed on ME. While doing the upgrade
it
was
mentioned that this firewall needs to be reinstalled and I continued
with
it.
Now after upgrade, though I don't see this firewall running but when I
go
to
Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs this firewall is listed there as
one
of
the installed product. I had tried to de-install it but it ask me some
password. I have no idea what that password could be. I have tried all
possible passwords that I could have used but it just does not like
any
one
of those.

Do you think this firewall could be causing problem? Would you know
how
can
I get rid of it without knowing the password?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Try:

1. Open IE, click Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab.

2. Select Never dial a connection.

3. Click LAN settings button and clear all check boxes.

4. If the above does not work, open a command prompt and:

ping 4.2.2.1 ENTER.

5. If #4 works, try:

ping yahoo.com ENTER

If #4 works and #5 does not, or neither works; try manually setting
your
IP
address, subnet mask, default gateway and primary DNS server. Use
the
IP of
your ISP's DNS server for primary DNS:

Hello,

I upgraded (not fresh install) my home desktop from WinME to WinXP
and
since then I am unable to connect to internet. I am connecting via
LAN
using
cable modem. It has been working fine before upgrade but am unable
to
connect
since upgrade. Here is my desktop info:

Compaq Presario S5005
Pentinum III 933 MHz
256 RAM
60 Gb Hard drive
Network card is "SMC EZ 10/100 SMC1211TX".

I have checked everything. Network connection is enabled and XP
says
working. I am able to get IP address (tried ipconfig). It shows me
a
valid
IP address assiged by my Belkin wireless router (192.168.2.72). I
am
unable
to do "ipconfig /renew", it syas unable to renew IP address. I am
unable
to
connect to net via IE. I have checked all IE settings and
everything
looks
fine.

I have even tried to disable the LAN connection and re-enabled but
still
same problem.

I ran the Network Setup Wizard but the last page showed following:

Cannot Complete the Network Setup Wiard
An error occurred during configuration of the network on this
computer.
You can configure your network manually, or you can run the wizard
again
with different settings.
To close this wizard, click Finish.

On the "Select a connection method" screen I selected the first
option
i.e.
"This computer connects directly to the internet. The other
computers
on
my
network connect to the Internet through this computer."

In nsw.log file, except for few other informative statements (as
to
enabling
this and starting that), the only one close to error message looks
like
this:
"Adapter configuration for home networking failed."

Can somebody pl. help me figure what is wrong? How to diagnose
and fix the problem? Any comments, suggestions or pointers will be
much
appreciated.

PS: I have two other computers connected to the same router and
everything
is working fine on those. The problem is only on this one that I
upgraded
from ME to XP. I had tried to connect this computer directly to
cable
modem
but same problem. When I do this, though the IP address is now
assigned by
comcast but still can not access net.

Regards
Shail
