OK Chuck…
By antivirus firewall I meant my PC-Cillin Antivirus program has embedded
Firewall, I just made sure this function was disabled.
Now, MORE TROUBLE…
Computer B is the one with problems and it seems they are getting worse…
I detected that the browser service was not started so I started it manually
using CONTOL PANEL – ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS – SERVICES.
I saw, using IPCONFIG /ALL, that my NetBios over TCP-IP was disabled… I did
-OPEN NETWORK CONNECTIONS (I have only ONE network connection and the name
appeared when ipconfig /all) then went to PROPERTIES – TCP-IP – PROPERTIES –
ADVANCED – WINS on Default and I changed it to Enable NetBios over TCP-IP…
Reboot the computer…
I immediately went to the command window and typed SC QUERY BROWSER and
showed…
SERVICE_NAME: browser
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 4 RUNNING
(STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 0 (0x0)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
After that I typed BROWSTAT STATUS…. And nothing, I tried directing the
output to a TXT file but the file came empty…
After that I typed IPCONFIG /ALL and it showed… (sorry my Windows XP is in
Spanish)

As you can see the NetBios is DISABLED but going to the NETWORK CONNECTIONS
and opening the TCP-IP properties it shows that NetBios over TCP-IP is
ENABLED (?????) and, as I told you I have only one Network Connection…
Then I returned to the command window and tried NET CONFIG SERVER, showing…
Nombre de servidor \\AVM3
Comentario del servidor Desktop Tonito
Versi¢n del programa Windows 2002
Servidor activo en
Servidor oculto No
N§ m ximo de sesiones abiertas 10
N§ m ximo de archivos abiertos por sesi¢n 16384
Tiempo de inactividad de sesi¢n (min.) 15
Se ha completado el comando correctamente.
You can see that it doesn’t show the NetbiosSmb and NetBT_Tcpip_ lines…
There’s something wrong in the NetBios OVER TCP-IP service, windows shows
that it is ENABLED but checking with IPCONFIG at the command window it shows
DISABLED… How could that happen? What am I missing?
I tried the SC QUERY BROWSER and, more trouble…
SERVICE_NAME: browser
TYPE : 20 WIN32_SHARE_PROCESS
STATE : 1 STOPPED
(NOT_STOPPABLE,NOT_PAUSABLE,IGNORES_SHUTDOWN)
WIN32_EXIT_CODE : 1460 (0x5b4)
SERVICE_EXIT_CODE : 1460 (0x5b4)
CHECKPOINT : 0x0
WAIT_HINT : 0x0
Now the browser service was somehow STOPPED…
Any recommendations?
Thanks again Chuck!

Hi everyone. I have three computers at home all running Windows XP, all three
connected to a 2Wire Home Portal who assigns each computer internal
addresses. The network has the following architecture…
Computer A, desktop computer, Windows XP, connected to the 2wire unit via
Ethernet, network address 199.20.1.41
Computer B, desktop computer, Windows XP, connected to the 2wire unit via
Ethernet, network address 199.20.1.42
Computer C, Laptop, Windows XP, connected via Wireless, network address
199.20.1.43
ALL computers have Windows Firewall disabled, Antivirus Firewall disabled,
different names for each computer and same workgroup “WORKGROUP”. ALL
computers have one or more shared folders. ALL have Microsoft Network Client,
Microsoft Share Files and Printers, QoS Packages Programming and TCP/IP
enabled and selected. I made sure ALL computers have the same services and
protocols enabled and with the SAME properties for all of them. I can access
INTERNET and POP3 Mail from ANY computer A, B or C.
The problem is that I can’t see Computer B in the Network.
When I go to “My Network Places” in computer A, I see computer A and C, I
can share files and printers among them. Going to “My Network Places” in
computer C is the same, I see computers C and A.
Going to “My Network Places” in computer B shows NOTHING, not even computer B.
The 2wire unit comes with an internet home portal where you can check the
status of the broadband connection and the home network. When I log into that
page it shows Computer A, B and C as active (????).
I used computer A and log into the 2wire Home Portal Internet page, I can
see the computers in the network and I can see the shared folders and files
of Computer A and C, but when I try to see the shared folders in computer B
it says that I don’t have permission to do that (???)
If I use computer B and log into the 2wire Home Portal Internet page, I can
see all three computers in the network but, when I try to access the shared
folders in computer A it shows the message “Can not find
"file://199.20.1.41". Make sure internet address is correct” (???). It shows
the same message (just changing the IP address) when I try to see ANY shared
folders in ANY computer, including computer B’s shared folders.
I checked the IP with running IPCONFIG from the console and ALL computers
returned the gateway and the IP address OK. The weirdest is that I used PING
from computer B, to computer A (199.20.1.41) and returned OK, 4 packages
sent, 4 packages received. PING from computer B to computer C (199.20.1.43)
and returned OK too, 4 packages sent, 4 packages received, that means there’s
communication between all computers, then why I can’t see computer B in the
network? What’s wrong in computer B?
Thanks for your help…
It sounds like you have physical / logical connectivity between all computers.
But you have a wireless computer involved. That presents a challenge.
You also have something called "Antivirus Firewall"? What is that? Note that
third party firewalls are known for causing problems like yours.

Look at other possibilities too, any might be the cause of your problem. Read

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):
