Directly connecting two computers

Attempting to directly connect two PC's, one with XP MC and one with
W98, and need to directly connect them using a crossover cable. I've
adjusted the firewall and security settings to allow
Computer-to-computer connections, and the XP machine recognizes the
connections but displays a "Limited or No Connectivity" message.

Any help will be appreciated.
