Seem to be going round in circles althought dont actually know if what im
trying to do will even work... got a PC(wired) and Laptop(wireless) conected
up to a Wanadoo wireless router. Trying to link them both up so each can
access each others shared files... was able to see the shared files earlier
but could not access them due to permission not being correctly set up.
although i cant even see either computer now. Therefore my questions are...
1.How do i get both computers to see each other?
2.How do i change the priveleges to allow access to the files?
Any help will be greatly recieved!
Chris
Chris,
Let's start with the visibility issue. One of the most common causes of this
problem would be a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or another
security component. There are several other possibilities too, and any might be
the cause of your problem. Read this article with an open mind.

And regards the accessibility issue, once you get the visibility bit working,
look at whether you have XP Home or Pro, on each computer. And if Pro, are you
using Simple or Advanced File Sharing? This will make a difference.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Simple
Thanks for that chuck...
I have now found from the pc the laptop however still am having problems
with the permissions to access files... however the laptop can't find the
pc... im sure ive tried all from those links...
PC is on XP Media Center
Laptop's XP Home
Any other ideas???
Chris
Chris,
If you've got a LAN with XP Home, you'll be better off using Simple File Sharing
and Guest authentication on both computers. Is Guest properly activated on both
computers?

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/file-sharing-under-windows-xp.html#Activate
Next, let's look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server",
and "net config workstation" from each computer, so we can diagnose the problem.
Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely
(download browstat!):

Hi Chuck, Here is everything asked for from the PC. The guest account IS active
<SNIP>
CHRIS
Hi Chris,
I'll look at that. But it will be much more useful when you include the same
from the other computer. The "problem" could be on either computer.
And please type your answers after mine - it will benefit both of us. Help us
to help you.

Ok Chuck here's the data from the laptop -
<SNIP>
Status for domain MSHOME on transport
\Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{AB0D36CC-9AF6-4B50-AF3D-20F8904140C3}
Browsing is NOT active on domain.
Master name cannot be determined from GetAdapterStatus.
Chris,
No problems indicated so far, with the exception of the above.
We know that the browser service is running on Computer (such an original name
you chose there), so why can't Chris see it? Most likely a firewall issue, or
maybe the WF / ICS service. Check both Chris and Computer, and keep an open
mind as you read my articles.

And check restrictanonymous on both computers.

Then go thru my troubleshooting guide, again on both computers.
