1394 firewire network trouble

I'm trying to connect my laptop, and desktop via firewire to transfer
files. I've been searching for hours now, and I don't feel any closer
to solving the problem. I have Windows XP MCE, and the firewire is
routing through my desktop to my laptop fine, but I'm not sure how to
transfer files. I used CapDVHS on the laptop to capture my local NBC
station's feed which was routed through the desktop, just to be sure it
was working.
I tried opening networking connections on each computer, and going to
the properties of the 1394 connection, then ip properties and setting
the ip to 192.168.2.1, and subnet to 255.0.0.0 on the desktop, and
192.168.2.2 on the laptop with the same subnet.'
I then went start/run //192.168.2.1 on the laptop, and it said "The
network path was not found".
Maybe I'm way off track. Could someone please help?
