Re: Can not use network shares on Server 2003 standard edition wit

Chuck,
Okay, I think that it is a permissions and or security issue, although I can
not figure out why. The physical network topology, is working fine. All PC's
are getting DCHP internal IP addresses, the Server has 2 NIC's which are
Static addresses. And I have been able to get two shares to work on all of
the PC's. My biggest issues now, are:
1. When I click on view workgroup computers, It comes back with an error
stating that the network is not available, check with the server
administrator to see if you have the proper permissions. (NO actual Error
Code). I have run IPCONFIG /ALL on the PC's and they all get good IP
addresses, Subnet Mask, and Default gateways. They come up as Hybrid. and all
looks okay. I am able to ping the servers NIC cards from other workstations.
But I still get the error, and then 2-3 minutes later when I try again, all
of a sudden I am able to view the workstations and server in the workgroup. I
have made sure that NETBIOS over TCP/IP was enabled in the WINS tab, and I
also made sue that the computer browser was started. (They were always set to
automatic) But I am still having the problem
2: I have created a Share called My Documents on the server where I have
stopped all inherited rights from above that folder, and given the users
group the read, and execute permission to the My documents Share folder. I
then created a Home directory for each user and again stopped the inherited
permisions to these folders and given Full control to that particular user
and the Administrators group. When I sign on to a workstation with a user who
is not part of the admininistrators group again in a workgroup enviornment
(NO Domain) I am able to see the MY documents share but I am not able to open
that users home folder under the MY documents share. The error states
\\server\my documents\username is not accessible. you might not have
permissions to use this network resource. Contact the Administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denined.
I have run the effective permisions on each of the Home directories and each
user has full control to their home directory. But still can not open the
file.
I think it is a login problem where I am not providing the proper
credentials because when I try to attach to the same folders as the
\\server\administrator I am able to open every single folder.
How do I make sure that the local user name and password is being reconized
by the server as the users logon credentials. (all local user names and
passwords currently match the server's Users and passwords

We have installed the server 2003 as a workgroup (NOT a Domain) we have set
up usernames and passwords on the server, created a share and given the users
group full control to this share. This is the 1st folder or share in a brand
new server that we have given any rights or permissions to. We are able to
browse the view workgroup computers and see the share. We have set the logon
for each local computer to be the usernames that we created on the server. We
have even put the same passwords for the local computer as the logon names of
the serevr. Yet everytime we try to attached to the share the error message
that we get is that we do not have permission to view that share. We have
even tried to view the share with a user who is part of the administrator
group.
There are no explict deny attributes set to any files on the computer.
This is on a new partition that only has 1 main share (New Server).
How do I get a workstation running Win XP Pro to authenticate or to use the
local login and password to give access to the servers shares. Or how do I
set up on a Win XP Pro PC the ability to login to a workgroup server using a
username and password, and have it stored in the users profile, that way when
they log into their local PC they are also providing credentials that allow
them to gain access to the servers shares that they have the right to see.
Britt,
What is the complete and precise error message?

A common cause of the error "...not have permissions..." is a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any one, or several, might be involved in your
problem. Read this article with an open mind.

For more direct help, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from the
server, and from 2 client computers, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):

The bottom line is that you have to eliminate network, transport, and Windows
Networking issues before working on file sharing permissions.

Chuck,
Thank You for the info, I know that the problem is definitely not a physical
cabling problem, because We just install new cabling and I personally tested
all of the cabling includig patch cords with a certification tester. But I
will take your suggestios taht you have given me and look over the questions
that you have asked. I may reply again in the AM with the actual error codes
that I am receiving, to see if you can be of any further assistance
Thank You
Britt
OK, Britt. Keep an open mind. Eliminate possible causes by symptoms and
testing. And let us know the details.
