chuck yes it is working now. thank you. but can you confirm for me that
running xp pro and xpmedia with SFS disabled i have to allow guests
permissions in the security tab and allow network in sharing/permissions tab.

Taking the second question first, if the computer with the shares is running
Simple File Sharing, you have to enable the Guest account. All network access
is as Guest.

Now, if you want to reset access to the default values, first delete the shares
that you want to reset. Next, Disable Simple File Sharing. Finally, add all
shares again. Or, you could use CACLS.

thank you Chuck. i thought there might of been a conection with 'guests' and
'network'. but i wanted to block the guests to access the folders and drives
that the network accessed. so i created another account. was this the best
option. i left certain permissions for the guest and block the second account.

The option will depend upon whether you're running Simple File Sharing or not.
With SFS, the only network access will be granted to Guest. With AFS, you can
provide network access thru Guest, and non-Guest, accounts as convenient. So,
the question first is whether you wish to use SFS? Know the difference.

yes chuck sorry i was going to tell you but i got side tracked. i have
disabled simple file sharing. i use xp pro as the main pc. and the networked
pc is running windows media
OK, Joe,
With SFS disabled, you can use either Guest or any other account to authenticate
for file sharing. So, is it working now?
