Trying to setup a NAT for internet access with router - SMC7404BRA EU model

Two laptops (XP and 2K) connected through the RJ 45 ports of the
SMC7404BRA EU model of router. Using a broadband ethernet (RJ45)
connection.
If I use the router in an ATM protocol connection, I am able to network
both laptops. In this case, I have not plugged in the broadband
ethernet into one of the RJ45 ports.
Settings for the router are ATM with global IP, DNS, Gateway, etc., for
the WAN and 192.168.2.xxxx network for the LAN.
When I plug in the ethernet LAN cable, the XP machine goes out of the
LAN, gets the global IP and is able to connect to the internet. The 2K
machine is still on the LAN. However, if I change the MAC address for
the 2K machine to match that of the XP machine, both computers are able
to access the internet, however losing the LAN. In this case, the
connection seems unstable.
I want to be able to have a LAN and a stable internet connection on
both laptops running XP and 2K. Any suggestions are welcome.
