Thanks a whole bunch Chuck.

I feel I must reiterate an important point. The two computers can only
communucate when the ADSL modem is powered up. Everything, computers and
modem, is connected to the hub.

Also, under the network setup wizard I chose OTHER in the "Select Connection
Method" screen. On the next I chose, "This computer connects to the Internet
directly or through a network hub..." This was done on both machines.

I do remember during the intall of XP Pro (desktop w/ Unknown Node Type) I
beleive I answered NO to a question relateing to DHCP. And, some networking
compocomponents are not intsalled as well.

MNM

What make and model modem are we talking about?

Details might be very useful here. The question that you answered, and the
missing network components, are very likely at least part of the problem. The
diagnostics that I requested will provide some good clues.

There are two states in which I gathered the information. State 1 is with
the ADSL unpowered, and state 2 with it powered up. I also included a ping
test for each state since there was something very interesting I found in
State 1, the laptop could ping the desktop but not vice versa.

The desktop is running XP Pro Ver 2002, SP 2 (English Lang. OS)
The laptop is running XP Home Ver 2002, SP2 (Japanese Lang. OS)
The ADSL modem is an NEC- Aterm DR207C (Japanese Market)

What's weird that I notice: W/O the ADSL, State 1, Browsing is active on
the Desktop (M) But the laptop shows it as inactive. Then there's the PING
problem in this state.
With the ADSL, the registry could not ba accessed, error 5 from M and error
53 from R (laptop). From your web pages, this is about normal though.
