New connection creatable WITHOUT prior installed network driver/adapter ?

I installed a new WinXP Prof on a computer with a built-in (physical) LAN netword card.

In one of the first steps after the actual installation I installed a new connection through
the wizard for the inhouse LAN with the local IP 192.168.0.10.
The process itself was successful but an connection (e.g. to the router) could not established.

I had to noticed that the driver for the network card was NOT installed during the WInXP
installation because it seems to be a special network hardware.

Ok, I have to search for an apropriate driver and to install it.
But: What about the previous created connection? Is this still valid and only
waiting for a driver to have fun ?

Or do I have to (delete and) re-create the connection again after network card driver
installation ?
