Loading XP Pro on Sony Laptop

My company has a Sony Vaio laptop that originally came with XP Home on
it. We immediately upgraded the system to XP Pro to get full network
capabilities. That was a couple years ago.

The machine is full of extra junk that the boss man wanted cleared off
because he felt it was running too slow. We bought a new XP Pro
license and proceeded with the fresh install. Everything went fine but
we cannot access the network at all.

After several lines of attack my tech guy gave up and re-installed
using the Sony Recovery DVD. This not only downgraded the machine to
Home addition but it also reloaded all the junk we were trying to get
rid of in the first place. My tech came back to me and said that the
Home install will access the web but not the internet.

Reinstalling the Home addition was done during my absence from work as
I would have preferred to have the Pro addition fixed. So now I have
the laptop back on my desk and I'm doing a fresh install of Pro again.
(Typing this as it works)

Is there any magic to getting a Sony Vaio laptop working from a fresh
install of Pro? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated
