I have read on the Internet that computers running Win XP Home cannot
become domain members, but can access Samba shares.

How can I do that if I cannot even browse other computers. Is there a
way I could authenticate and access this computer?

You need to go see your IT Dept. First, your new computer's user account
and password needs to be added to the Linux box. Second, your user
account and password needs to be added to Samba users. Third, XP Home
only authenticates as Guest which is usually disabled in professional
operating systems like Linux and is disabled by default with Samba. We
have over 170 laptops running XP Home accessing a Samba server at
school that I set up, so something is not set up correctly at your
office.
