Re: Unable to ping other local IP XP Pro PCs.

If you have any non-Microsoft firewalls in the mix, don't disable those -
uninstall them, fix the network problem, then reinstall them and configure
them for network access.

Hi all,

I have been working on a troubleshoot, for my friend's computers, that
involves two XP PRO SP2 machines. One machine, Dell desktop computer, is
hardwired to the router. The other machine, an IBM Laptop, is wirelessly
(and has been hardwired, as well) connected to same router.

The problem is both pcs cannot ping each other (hardwired, wirelessly),
thus
none of the other networking functions between the machines work, such as
DirectX: DirectPlay, failure to connect to shares of each machine. I know
if
I can get the pinging to work between both machines, I will be able to get
the other specified network functions working.

History of troubleshooting thus tried to fix it:
1) Both computers can ping the router with 4 successful replies. They
both
can ping a local print server just fine with 4 successful replies. They
both
can ping themselves at localhost or 127.0.0.1 with success. They both can
ping a 3rd pc (windows 98 wirelessly connected) just fine, however, the
Win98
machine can not ping both XP Pro pcs. The firewall Norton Internet
security
on the desktop has been disabled, the Standard Windows Firewall on the IBM
laptop has been disabled for the troubleshooting. Still both can not ping
each other!

2) Both computersâ?? were booted into safe mode with networking, and both
can
successfully ping each other just fine! One computer NOT in safe mode
(Labeled A) and the other in safe mode with networking (Labeled B):
"A" successfully pinged "B" with 4 replies fine.
"B" failed to ping "A" with 4 timed out replies.

3) I have read many Google searches, Microsoft searches about how Spyware
or
Adware have screwed up the TCP/IP stacks or corrupted them. Both machines
did have a past of Spyware and Adware infiltration and few viruses. All
have
been successfully removed and have been verified by multiple different
reputable products. I have tried many paths of fixing...For example, I
have
Re-installed XP SP2, but did not feel that it really did re-install
because
the machine had it already on it. I did not want to do an uninstall of XP
SP2 because of application adverse issues arising and did not want to
troubleshoot new problems. Also, executed the NETSH INT IP RESET command
to
see if that would fix it...nope it did not.

4) I had my friend bring her laptop to my location and on my network that
I
know is clean from viruses, spyware, adware, and have taken many
precautionary steps to protect my network. One of my hardwired equipment
could not ping her laptop, with all personal firewalls turned off. We
tried
her laptop both hardwired and wireless and I have different router and
networking equipment, in my network and she still could not receive my
pings
to her. She was able to ping me just fine though!

Does anyone have any suggestion or workable fixes in mind,
Thank you in advance,

-Dagon_RM
