Web through Mobile Phone fails, but can ping server

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

I have an odd problem where I can't seem to connect to websites, FTP or
email when using my mobile as a modem, but I can PING and TRACERT the
servers from the DOS Console.

Everything works fine when I connect via any WiFi or via any LAN, but
whenever I use the modem it's as if the applications can't see it ? It
allows be to connect to the internet via the phone and I can see the
machines using PING and TRACERT, but nothing at the application level.
It's the same for Firefox and IE

I'm wondering if there is some knackered setting in the Windows
Registry that is blocking these applications from "seeing" the
connection which appears to be fully connected when you check using
IPCONFIG /ALL

Any help greatly appreciated..

For the record, the machine is a Sony Vaio T1XP/L, the phone is a Sony
Ericsson K700i on Orange (UK) connected to the Sony via BlueTooth
