I've run the networking wizard, but the host doesn't see the network. When
I checked IP addresses and network masks, they were not compatible. Do I
need to set these manually? If so, any suggestions on what to set them to?

Are you connecting by means of a router, using a crossover cable, or
using a hub?

If you are using a router then the i.p. addresses should be handled
properly by the DHCP server in the router and your only concerns
should be that:
1. Both computers are using the same Workgroup name and that the
computer names are different.
2. There are no firewalls in operation (including the Windows XP
built-in one) on either computer, at least not until after the network
connection is configured and working properly.

If you are using a crossover cable or connecting via a hub with no
router present then in addition to the above you also need to manually
configure the i.p. address and subnet mask on both computers. The
i,p, addresses used need to be the same in the first 3 segments and
different in the 4th segment. There are several specific sets of
i.p. addresses that are designated for this type of use, the most
commonly used of which is the 192.168.xxx.yyy where xxx is a numeric
value between 0 and 255 (the same on both machines) and yyy is also a
numeric value between 0 and 255, but different for each machine. The
subnet mask needs to be 255.255.255.0
