Re: adding new user to domain from a remote location

Yes - she must be an administrataor on the laptop to change its name and
join the domain.

thanks for the help so far, the user has a username and password already
entered into the user list for the server, as she has been using outlook
web
access before her new laptop arrived today to read company email

i have added her computer to the list of computers on the server.

as i see it she should be able to login onto the server using the sbs2003
vpn client, this will authenticate her as a valid user, the next step is
however to configure her laptop with the correct machine name and then
configure her laptop to be a member of the UK domain........

is this possible?

Despite the subject line, it sounds like you want to join the remote
computer to the domain - not just add a user:

If you are connecting with the MS VPN client, then yes - you can join
the
machine to the domain. However, you will be told to reboot, and when
you do
so; you must select to logon using dialup connection. After the first
such
logon you can logon with cached credentials if you wish. If you are not
using the MS client, this may not work.

Our main server is based in the UK, with a new user in the Far East.
We
can
connect the laptop to the server here in the UK easily using VPN.

Is it possible with the correct access rights on the laptop to get it
added
to the domain here? this would then allow for easier configuration of
all
of
the other networks settings and defaults to be applied to the laptop
as of
the UK network and other users?
