Our main server is based in the UK, with a new user in the Far East. We can

Is it possible with the correct access rights on the laptop to get it added
to the domain here? this would then allow for easier configuration of all of
the other networks settings and defaults to be applied to the laptop as of
the UK network and other users?

Chris,

What is "the laptop"? Is that a computer used by the "new user" in the "Far
East"?

What VPN client do you use on the laptop? Does the VPN start before or after
logging in to the laptop?
# If you login first, then establish the VPN connection, it's going to be kind
of hard to authenticate to the domain without a connection.
# If you establish the VPN connection before login, then joining the laptop to
your UK domain is theoretically possible. Are you planning to do the joining
process itself, with the laptop in the "Far East"?
# I've had experience with running a computer at far distance from a domain
controller. If there's any network traffic of any amount, it's not a fun task.
In high stress situations, the stress level just goes up as the computer owner
watches the domain login take forever. Good luck if there are any problems.
