I might be the biggest dummy around, but I really have been working with
computers for some 30 years. I always thought I was pretty good till now.
Thank you for all the help. I downloaded Browstat and read your post about
using the command window. I can not get it to write to a file so I do not
have that. I have done the config all and it is here. 1st the Laptop then
the desktop.
I can not see either on the network neighborhood. I have tried to turn off
all the firewalls and use the wizard again.

Do you have any firewall software running one either pc?

I have followed all the directions and still can not get anything in My
netwok neighborhood. When I "view workgroup computers" it says I might
not
have permission to use this service. It is a wired network with only 2
comuters.
Yes the wizard turned on the windows firewall during the set-up. I have
tried to turn it off on both. I also have Norton running. I have both
running to a switch. Do I need a router? Everthing I've read says I don't.
carefully. It is just a laptop connecting to a desktop. Both are DELL. The desktop XP
home the laptop XP professional.
Jim,
If you have 2 computers, a NAT router is an absolute necessity. What have you
been reading that says no router is needed? Not a lot here, I'd bet.

If you really don't want to use a NAT router (are you paying for 2
connections?), then use IPX/SPX for file sharing. But set IPX/SPX up

A NAT router is only required if the systems would be connecting to the
Internet. If the two PCs will only be connecting between each other, then a
switch is ok! Jim never stated that these will connect to the Internet.
Jim,
If you're not connected to the Internet, then you don't need a NAT router.
Based upon your problem description so far:
# Two computers.
# Reporting inability to share files.
# You "followed all the directions".
# You cannot get the two computers to see each other in Network Neighborhood.
You did not explicitly say that you don't have Internet service; and the vast
majority of folks asking for help here do have that. Your problem fits a known
scenario which pops up here from time to time - a cable broadband customer
paying for 2 IP addresses, and getting 2 on separate subnets. Since that's not
it, let's move on.
One of the most common causes of your problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall. There are other possibilities too. Norton
antivirus, or Norton antiworm, could indeed be a problem. Read this article
with an open mind.

If no help yet, provide "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each
computer, so we can diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely:
