Alison,
The flashing orange light certainly doesn't sound like working hardware on both
ends. Look at the configuration on the device drivers, in Local Area Connection
Properties - Configure - Advanced tab. What media type is in use on both cards?
"100 Full", or "Auto Select"? Try changing from one selection to the other on
ONE computer. If that doesn't help, put that setting back, and try the other
computer. Test one setting change at a time.
If changing the setting on both computers (one at a time) doesn't help, get
another crossover cable. They can be defective.
Or get a switch, and a pair of straight-thru cables. A switch, with its own set
of lights, will help you identify which computer (cable / network card) is
defective.
