Hello,
I have a strange problem with Internet Connection Sharing. I have one computer ("HOST") with two network adapters. One adapter is connected to the Internet and has a static public IP. The second adapter is connected to my second computer using a crossed cable. This second adapter has IP 192.168.0.1 (subnet 255.255.255.0) assigned; my second computer's ("SLAVE") adapter has IP 192.168.0.2 (subnet 255.255.255.0) assigned, the Default Gateway is set to 192.168.0.1 and Primary DNS to 192.168.0.1. Both my computers are part of the same WORKGROUP. On my HOST computer i enabled Internet connection sharing for my Internet adapter (i configured all settings manually without any luck, then i used Network Setup Wizard and i got the same result). My HOST computer has no problem accessing the Internet.
The problem is that i cannot connect to the Internet from my SLAVE computer. I can ping the HOST computer (192.168.0.1), i can ping my Internet IP (my HOST computer second adapter) and nothing more. If i try to ping a host i get "Request time out". I HAVE Sygate Personal Firewall enabled on my HOST computer with a rule saying "Allow all traffic from 192.168.0.2 ip on all ports". I have turned OFF Windows Firewall on both machines (no other firewall or security application is running on my HOST or SLAVE computer).
A tracert to any ip / host gives me:
tracert google.com
Tracing route to google.com [72.14.207.99] over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms ZEUS [192.168.0.1] 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 * * * Request timed out. 4 * * * Request timed out. And so on.
I was thinking the problem could arrise from the fact some windows services are stopped on my HOST or / and SLAVE computers so i checked with a clean Windows XP Pro and configured all services as they look like on a fresh system.
Any help would be really appreciated (i'm trying to solve this problem for about 2 months now).
Stefan
Some firewall programs are incompatible with ICS on the host computer. As a test, I'd enable the Windows firewall, disable the Sygate firewall, and see if that solves the problem.
Thank you, Steve. I was thinking to include this in my previous message, but i somehow forget about it.
So, i tested with the following configurations:
1. Windows Firewall enabled (this happens by default when you run Network Setup Wizard) and no other security program enabled.
2. Windows Firewall disabled and no other security program enabled (very risky - do NOT try this at home! :) )
3. Windows Firewall disabled and Sygate enabled.
4. Windows Firewall enabled and Sygate enabled.
I had no luck getting ICS working.
Still waiting for some help.
Stefan
I've had little luck getting ICS working if i manually assign the client pc an IP address - such as the 192.168.0.2 you're using.
But with the client set to obtain an IP address automatically i find ICS works fine.
Martin.
Thank you, Marting.
I tried this too: set the client to "Optain IP address automatically" and the result was the same. The only difference was that the IP address assigned to my SLAVE was 192.168.0.16.
I will, eventually, reinstall both my systems, but i just *need* (it became my personal "fight" with WINXP :) ) to know why it is not working.
Stefan .
