network printing problem

I have multiple XP machines (Pro and Home). They are all connected to
a network printer through an AS400 server, one of them connects through
a local port configured on the PC. Until a week a go everything worked
fine. Now most of the XP machines have troubles printing, they usually
get the message
"The printer has not responded but the Microsoft office program may be
able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue
to wait for the printer?"
I have changed some of the PCs so they connect to the printer through
the 1 XP machine that was connected "locally" through the network.
When I do that it seems to work OK.
Any ideas what is going on? As far as I know everything is up to date
and there are no viruses or spy/adware. Please help
.
