Should have been written as:
.....make sure that your son has some spyware/malware "detection/removal programs" installed on PC, such as Ad-Aware and/or SpyBot.

Zone alarm disabled, exceptions are correct, and since he never connected to
the college network, no software was downloaded. The schools IT Dept claims
this is an issue with newer builds on XP_Pro SP2, and the firewall needs to
be off for the initial connection, then it or any firewall can be re-enabled.
He needs to connect to agree to their "terms of use", which is an automatic
re-direct when you connect.
He does have another system, running 98 which connects just fine.
I have checked everything I could, we talked to the Sys Admin of another
major college in Georgia, and to an IBM Network Eng. Neither one could find
any ideas.
The schools IT says it's a "known" MS Issue, that they won't admit to and
have no fix for, which I just do not buy. But..his system never reads that
the firewall is off no matter what we do. In control panel/firewall is lists
"off" but in Secutiry center list "on" at the same time. On my home system
with same OS, I can't duplicate his, and his doesn't duplicate mine with the
exact same settings. Thank goodness for "free" minutes on the cell phone.
I would love to be able to uninstall the XP Firewall 100%.
Thanks to all that are trying to assist,
David

He made need to add those applications to the exception list. Many college require that run before you can connect to their system. And with the firewall enabled, and these applications are not added to the exceptions list. He can't connect to them.
