Workgroup membership has no effect on accessing shared files. A
computer in any workgroup can access a computer in any other
workgroup.

By default, Windows XP allows all users on all computers to access
shared files over the network, without checking user names or
passwords.

If Dad's computer runs Windows XP Home Edition, he can assign a
network password to the Guest account. When someone tries to access a
shared file over the network, he'll be prompted to enter the Guest
account password. To assign a network password to the "Guest"
account:

1. Click Start | Run.
2. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
3. Under "Users for this computer", click Guest.
4. Click Reset Password, enter a password, and click OK.

By default, Windows XP Professional works the same as Windows XP Home
Edition.

If Dad's computer runs Windows XP Professional, he can disable simple
file sharing and control networked access based on user names and
passwords. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with details:
